Jamaica carnival 2026: YardMas launches band theme

KINGSTON, Jamaica —

YardMas Carnival has officially unveiled its 2026 costume collection, “Galleria,” a fine-art-inspired theme that reimagines Carnival in Jamaica as a living gallery—where masqueraders don’t just wear costumes; they become the artwork.

YardMas launches “Galleria” for Carnival in Jamaica 2026, turning the road into a moving art museum

The launch marked a bold creative pivot for the band, translating iconic artists and masterpieces into road-ready designs that blend museum-level storytelling with pure carnival energy.

The band premiered Galleria with a hybrid launch—online and at Palace Cineplex inside Sovereign Centre (St Andrew)—transforming the cinema into an immersive showcase built like an exhibition, complete with behind-the-scenes visuals, designer spotlights, and dramatic big-screen reveals.

“Galleria” was conceptualised by Yard Mas Director Richard “Richie Ras” Spence and guided by newly appointed Creative Director Anna-Lisa Guthrie, who led the theme’s artistic direction and also designed two of the sections. The creative vision was rooted in the idea of moving from canvas to costume. As Yard Mas explained in coverage of the launch, the concept flips the traditional museum experience on its head: instead of art hanging on walls, the art moves through Kingston—costumes reimagined from famous artists and works, brought to life by the masqueraders wearing them.

For 2026, YardMas’ Galleria collection features eight designs—seven full carnival costumes and one specially created Monday wear option inspired by the Trinidad tradition of lighter “Monday Wear” ahead of the big road day. The sections include Venus and Dali, designed by Anna-Lisa Guthrie; Picasso by Designs by Dru; Starry Night by Emma Aqui; Ebony by Fonrose; Frida by Lauren Austin; Monet by David Dewer; and the Monday wear section, Basquiat. The band also emphasized inclusivity in its design approach, noting that three costumes include men’s pieces—expanding options while keeping the brand’s signature style.

YardMas is also focusing on Hurricane Melissa relief efforts. According to the Jamaica Observer, Delano Seiveright, state minister in the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, pointed out at the launch: “Carnival has contributed significantly over the last several years to Jamaica’s economy, and we are truly grateful for it. But it’s not just the big dollar spend, it’s the fact that it goes to the pan chicken man, the barbers, the hair stylists, the costume designers, the taxi man, restaurants, bars, everybody… Carnival in Jamaica will only continue to get bigger and better.”
